This is the first feature film created by David Lynch, who went on to the "The Elephant Man,", "Dune," many other films, and the popular television series, "Twin Peaks."  Fans of the film include Stanley Kubrick, Mel Brooks, George Lucas, and John Waters.  According to commentaries, Kubrick apparently considered it his "most spiritual movie."  Our discussant, Dr. Mark James, has been intrigued by this film for many years due to its strange, evocative, dreamlike, surreal, primary process qualities.  Dr. James…

Based on the British romance novel by Ian McEwan, this film takes place during the early days of World War II.  Class conflict and psychological conflict combine to make some sentiments irrevocable.  Starring Keira Knightly, James McAvoy, and Vanessa Redgrave, this film won one Oscar and was nominated for six more.  Dr. Charles Zapf will be the discussant for our final film of the season.
