“My Conception of the Psychoanalytical Work with Couples”

Following my view of the couple and the personal introduction of the central concept of couple work, this paper retraces the course taken by suffering couples who finally decide to consult a specialist, a couple’s psychoanalyst. Dr. Smadja will describe its principal phases, from the circumstances of the first consultation to the objectives and benefits expected of psychoanalytic work with couples, including technical aspects he has introduced in this field of practice. Then, he will offer readers a clinical illustration which is our work with Martine and Louis.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To demonstrate a psychoanalytic view of the couple and the concept of couple work,
  2. To demonstrate the principal phases of the course taken by suffering couples which consult a couple’s psychoanalyst, and
  3. To demonstrate the main technical aspects of the psychoanalytic work with couples.
